  • Parc naturel régional de la Brenne

Walk in the Brenne Regional Natural Park The first in a long series of articles on birding or trekking sites in the French pampas and more ... I think there is no better viewing spot than near home self, since this allows regular monitoring of it and therefore to know it inside out! Nature and birds are everywhere! For this post, I'm going to tell you about the gigantic Brenne Natural Park. This regional reserve located in Indre-et-Loire, Center (France) is made up of hundreds of lakes and ponds surrounded by swamps, forests and meadows. This landscape mosaic and the richness of the soils found there allow a very important diversity of living species. Two parts of the park, to the east and to the north, however, have significant agricultural activity, which obviously affects the flora and fauna found there. I have concentrated my observations so far on the outskirts of the Chérine reserve (see map), near Saint-Michel-en-Brenne, inside the Grande Brenne. Most of the wetlands are found in this part of the park and it is also where there are good observatories. o Pond of the Sous: In addition to this, you need to know more about it. Early in the morning, when the sun has not yet dissipated the moisture from the soil, the fog lets appear a whole fauna associated with wetlands, from Piping Ducks to Common Snipe, even with a little luck the famous Star Bittern. Then, the mist disappears and you can discover the hundreds of organisms, hitherto hidden, emerging from their torpor with the arrival of the rays of the sun. During the year, this protected area is classified as the fourth wetland of international importance in France, according to the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). Especially in summer, many species (from butterflies, mammals to birds) are present, with 3/4 of the French endangered bird species migrating or staying in the Brenne Regional Park. Between the two migration periods, when it starts to get cold up there in northern Europe (October - March), thousands of Common Cranes pass over the Brenne. A small part stays there from November to February. It's quite amazing to hear them and then see them pass in a 'V' in the sky or in herds in the cornfields in stubble.
